- smsm42 3y agoThe copyright mafia came to IA and said "it's a nice archive you got going on here, it would be a shame somebody filed a lawsuit accusing you of copyright infringement and letting all this work of decades be shut down... but of course some arrangements could be made to prevent this from happening, if you're reasonable". It's not about knowledge, it's about power, and the copyright mafia has a lot of it.
- toomuchtodo 3y agoThe Internet Archive likely has to show a good faith effort to adhere to copyright and fair use as they have ongoing litigation initiated by book publishers about their book lending practices during COVID Sometimes, unfortunately, smart people have to put on a show for reasons beyond their control. Library Genesis and Anna’s Archive are alternative libraries available for consumption without these lending controls. (no affiliation with the Internet Archive)
- greyface- 3y ago> smart people have to put on a show for reasons beyond their control They didn't have to do this. Their actions with CDL were well-intentioned but foolish. I'm no fan of our current IP regime, but I recognize the reality of copyright law as it exists today. No reasonable interpretation of existing copyright law allows them to do what they did. In an attempt to Uber us all into a friendlier (but DRM-powered) IP regime, they've painted themselves into a corner, and now find that they "have to" make foundational compromises on their position on the free and open distribution of knowledge. I treasure the Internet Archive and I dearly hope this lawsuit doesn't ruin them. When this is over, I hope they've realized that DRM is not the answer.
- 1letterunixname 3y agoExactly. They need to mind their own business and get out of the business of policing the world.
