What is ignored or neglected by the media, but will be studied by historians?

- PaulHoule 3y agoThat’s the trouble with these links to Twitter. Even when somebody does post a series of tweets that spell out a complex story you often have to wade through thousands of tweets that say something nonsensical like “SQUEE!” It sure would have life made better if Twitter had kept requiring login to see anything. That said, Mastodon has a very similar model for threads which are similarly broken whereas somebody posts a monologue and gets really pissed when somebody else replies. Classic example of people extending a mechanism beyond what it is good for.
- ZeroGravitas 3y agoTwitter only shows you direct link tweets now, when not logged in. It's not super clear if this is a genius monetization strategy or just a bug. Best theory I've heard is that they wanted to block access to everything, but that broke a bunch of their own systems that depended on that access, so they were forced to restore access to the tweet itself and then just silently cut off access to the rest of the thread, with no real indication that they are doing so. So it's 50/50 monitization and bug at the moment.

- 3cats-in-a-coat 3y ago@dang I flagged this submission. Why? I think it's time to disallow Twitter links, because most are threads, and you can't open them without an account. For example this one.
