Ask HN: As a senior developer what are some good resources for staying updated?
Could any senior developer kindly recommend a reliable resource for staying updated on technical stuff ?
when I say technical stuff I mean in your respective domains and software engineering in general.
- mikece 3y agoDepends what technical stuff you mean... but why won't the means by which you stayed up to date in the past work for you as a more senior dev? The definition and job requirements change per shop (and per team, in some cases) but a senior dev is just a more experienced dev that is taking a slice of non-technical responsibility like mentorship, having more of a represent-the-team role in meetings, basically a deputy team lead. I would think staying on top of technical "stuff" would be the easiest part of the whole equation.
- PaulHoule 3y agoIf it is "blockchain" or "AI" you want to stay updated on I question why. FOMO is not a good reason.
- AnimalMuppet 3y agoI'd go further. It's not just those areas. There's an awful lot of "cutting edge" that I don't need to be at. Is the next new thing going to be that much better than the previous one? Enough to make it worth the time to learn? For many people, no, it won't be. And I'm one of those "many people". So I don't try to learn every new thing in any depth. I just try to keep a bit of an eye on the overall landscape. HN provides a lot of info about things that are going on, at a somewhat course level. That's enough for me - I don't need a fine-grained level for most things. When I see something that shows enough promise that I want to learn more, if there's not a link on HN, there's always Google.
- PaulHoule 3y ago“Learn a new programming language” is one of the worst of them, “create a new programming language” is the path less taken but will the teach self-taught programmer the compiler techniques that CS students learn. (e.g. “functional programming” is a pale shadow of what you can do if you understand how compilers work.) At any given time I have three side projects going and I always wind up learning things certain things in great depth. For instance I have a long-running project of making decorative cards and it has meant getting extraordinary results with very ordinary equipment and had to write my own color management software so I know a huge amount about light and color and wide-gamut displays and such. To be fair I did get a PhD which teaches you how to go out and discover the knowledge you need whether it is written down or not. I very much like reading on a wide range of topics and have a vast curiosity that you will see in what I write on this site but when I really want to learn I start some project which is a little bit beyond the bounds of what most people are doing and overcome all the obstacles to getting there.
