My psychiatrist freaks out and shames me when I admit to drinking soda in any volume (most recently, I told her 1L per day) and she objects, of course, to the high caffeine content, as well as the volume of sugar and empty calories. Now, these are valid concerns, don't get me wrong; I really should avoid caffeine at all times (I suffer from hypertension, anxiety, and C-PTSD) and being obese, the sugar isn't doing me any favors, and I'm sure that my kindly dentist would appreciate it if I consumed less soda.
I was briefly contemplating a switch to diet sodas, just to reduce the sugar and calorie counts, but I received reliable and trustworthy knowledge that all artificial "sweeteners" are much, much worse, and indeed contribute to obesity and innumerable allied disorders. So, I stuck with the sugary varieties (but I endeavored to drink Mexican sodas with cane sugar, rather than HFCS.)
A few months ago, I was shopping at the farmers market, and noticed that they carry sparkling water. This is a Godsend for me, because now I simply stock a dozen cases of sparkling water; it's very tasty, they add no sugar or any other "sweetener", it contains no acids, it has no sodium, and it has zero caffeine. So I told my psychiatrist, and she was mollified for the time being.
The only caveat with the sparkling water is that it contains "natural flavors". Of course, this is a common labeling deception where the FDA allows manufacturers to put whatever chemicals they want into a food product and call it a generic name. So, I have not discovered what "natural flavors" are in this brand of sparkling water. I might send an inquiry to the corporate email address to see if they'll disclose more. I'm a tiny bit concerned that, guzzling a six-pack of sparkling waters every day in this heat, I will wind up with an overdose of unknown "natural flavor" chemicals. But perhaps that is preferable to sugary caffeinated sodas? The devil you know, vs. the devil you don't.
