Ask HN: Why is this video boring?
As a hobby I've been making YouTube videos on my electronic projects for a while. I can't help coming to the conclusion that I'm just making quite boring videos. I find them interesting, but the click through rates and average view duration tell me that they are not. What am I getting wrong? Why is this boring? https://youtu.be/glCIuOoFm7U
- ggeorgovassilis 3y agoI liked the delivery (presentation, length and speed). The topics are interesting in terms of what they deliver, but electronics is to me a hobby that drives my curiosity. And your channel is all about utility (connecting gadgets together), you don't go into fundamentals or discuss circuit diagrams (curiosity). I wouldn't subscribe, but those 30k subscribers you have can't be wrong.
- iamflimflam1 3y agoThat's really interesting feedback. One thing I have noticed is that going into fundamentals and showing circuit diagrams seems to bore people as well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
- kidgorgeous 3y agoas someone who used to grow yt channels, some things that could help: show your face on camera. people bond with people. have either your face or exaggerated on thumbnails for better click-through. use google keyword planner and/or keywords everywhere to target current highly searched for keywords in your niche
- iamflimflam1 3y agoSomething I have struggled with is targeting a niche - I really want to do things that interest me, which means my content tends to be fairly random...
- houseatrielah 3y agoYou introduce with the words "magic trick" <-- I need to know why I'm going to spend the next 10m watching this. Ok, only now do I read the clickbait title: run Doom But you run Doom at 1-minute mark. Why am I still watching after 1-minute, idk. I'm guessing all your people drop off after 1m.
- brudgers 3y agoThe video in the question was no longer available, so I watched a couple of minutes of the latest video "No power, no problem." The production values are very good. Audio, visuals, tight script. It comes across as professional and by the book. It's different from the videos I watch on similar topics. The differences I felt are: + Your video has a strong fourth wall. It doesn't open with "Today, we are..." or "Welcome back..." + The pace is high. Two minutes in there had been more than a dozen different scenes. There have been at least half a dozen different pieces of hardware. + Two minutes in, I am guessing that the video will is about wireless charging. That's nearly a quarter of the way through the video. I want to be clear, when I say "the video is not for me" I mean exactly that. "For me" is not a criticism. You don't know me, didn't know I existed, and didn't make it with the idea I was in the audience. I am not in the intended audience for most things. So that's the big question. Who is your intended audience? Making videos for the algorithm is a local minimum and it looks to me like the video ticks all the boxes. Maybe it's time for some hill climbing: + second person + slower + formally pedagogical (tell what you are going to say, say it, tell what you said). + good enough production Or not. Good luck. - iamflimflam1 3y agoThank you for taking the time, and for the really helpful comments/feedback. Very much appreciated. I think you've hit the nail on the head with the "Who is your intended audience?" - that is a very good question. I've been increasing the pacing of what I've been doing because retention has been poor. But on reflection, I think I've taken it too far and made something that is actually less engaging. [edit] just checked out your blog - very nice https://benrudgers.posthaven.com/ https://benrudgers.posthaven.com/
