"An adult weighing 70 kilograms or 154 pounds would have to drink more than nine to 14 cans of aspartame-containing soda daily to exceed the limit and potentially face health risks"
I drink one can of diet soda a couple of times a week and was starting to get worried lol
- extragood 3y ago14 cans is just shy of 5 liters by my calculations. A little less than double recommended daily water consumption. You really have to be actively trying to hurt your body to hit those numbers
- evulhotdog 3y agoWelcome to America. Some of my older family members suck it down as if it were actually water.
- carlmr 3y agoEven before this report came out, we knew that Aspartame falls apart into Phenylalanine and Methanol in your body. If you don't suffer from Phenylketonuria, Phenylalanine is a harmless amino acid. And should you suffer from that you will know. Methanol on the other hand is known to be damaging. However if you drink beer you consume small amounts of methanol. Same for most alcoholic drinks. But these small amounts are very high compared to what you get from aspartame. Which is why I was never worried too much about aspartame in small amounts. Just don't make it your main hydration source. One small doubt in my comparison is that one of the main treatments for methanol poisoning is to give pure ethanol. Since it competes with the same enzymes, alcohol dehydrogenases, that break Methanol down into toxic compounds. If you consume aspartame without alcohol there's no ethanol to compete. But it's still small amounts, do with that what you will. If you've ever been to California you will know that everything may cause cancer. The question is how much. And I still think Aspartame is the least of your worries if you don't live an extremely healthy lifestyle already. I.e. zero sugar, zero alcohol, no red meat, no processed food, no cigarettes...
- asyx 3y agoDo you have a link handy for this? Not because I doubt you just because I'd really love something I can link next time somebody tells me diet soda will kill me earlier than the sugar in normal soda even though I'm diabetic. Like, I'd link your comment but then I'd get "that's just a comment on hacker news... Look at this Twitter account who talks about the aspartame mafia having bribed literally the whole world though!"

- ProllyInfamous 3y agoMy birth father did this to himself — decades of diabetes and ultimately he couldn't put down the daily 12-pack of Diet Coke ("it's diet!"). He dead before 60. Couldn't work at 50.
