Why did Apple abandon the web?
I've recently learned that apple created html canvas. Why did they stop? Wasn't the original vision for the iPhone to only use the browser? Is there no money in the space? Surely a company as large as Apple could create new web based standards in safari to increase their stronghold over their ecosystem. (not saying it's a good thing)
- gemanor 3y agoThe appstore is a monopoly platform for Apple. If they will create a web ecosystem they will have to share the cake with other providers (cdn, hosting, serving, etc.).
- brucethemoose2 3y agoBecause the AppStore is an hilariously profitable gravy train, thanks to the 30% cut. TBH I am surprised Apple even allows Safari shortcuts on the homescreen.
- vsgherzi 3y agoFair point, however in the newer safari update it seems like Apple gave some love to app based websites to make it feel more like a native app (better ui and notification support). I guess it might just be a ruse to prevent the US government bringing down the hammer on them though.
- Klonoar 3y agoYou say this as if Apple doesn't participate in standards development at all anymore.
