Why do people seem sympathetic to these arguments, but not to patent trolls?
They seem parallel to me. It's an accusation that you did all the hard work and someone else is "stealing" your idea. But we know posting trash on the internet isnt hard work. The hard work is sorting through all the trash and finding correlations. Just like patenting "something" isn't hard work, ideas are free and engineering and sales are hard work.
- __loam 3y agoPatent trolls don't use the patents they have for anything useful. Their activities are a net loss for society. This is contrasted with people (like artists or writers) producing something that has value. If people who make what you're calling "trash" can't make a living producing what they make, then the incentives to produce that work disappear and the content well that AI depends on dries up. Protecting people who actually make stuff is the entire point of copyright.
- Veen 3y agoIdeas are free, but their execution in the form of useful, high-quality written content, videos, etc is not. It’s quite expensive and time consuming to create content that is not, as you put it, merely trash on the Internet. If people hadn’t done that work, there would be nothing for these companies to train their AIs and generate profit with.
