I side with this and like to remind people of Joel Spolsky's words, "all abstractions leak".
It's very gratifying when you're a Unity dev in a room of Unity devs and you're the only person who can diagnose and fix a build problem involving raw OpenGL ES and Objective-C++.
From another angle, these baser systems like C and vanilla JS are _simpler_ and you just have a lot less to learn at once. It's a good waypoint.
