If you're not going to attend any other conference, meetup, or other ways to meet professionals in the field of your career, then you should go to the conference. Connections and networking are the bread and butter of getting your career going.
If you already have that, then sure skip it. But the Pyrenees are going to be there a week before or a week after the conference.
- kevdozer1 3y agoTotally, thank you. I should've mentioned that her planned trip and all her reservations for places to stay along the trail coincide with the conference. But your point stands- I am doing graduate research, but a conference like this is a much better way to meet people in my field.
- AYBABTME 3y agoTo be fair, most conferences are fungible. You can meet the people you'll meet there elsewhere, at another conference or at other events like meetups. If for some reason SIGGRAPH is really the one place where you expect to meet the folks you must meet, then yeah ditch the hike and go. But if there's other conferences you can go to and achieve the same effect, I would go to the other conferences, and go hike with my gf.
