They probably either live in reality, where the only people who will help you advance your policy goals are those who regularly agree with you or have been consigned to obscurity by not living in that reality. Do you want to be "true to yourself" or do you want to win? It doesn't help that people who have rock solid principles are easy to beat as you can just do what they are unwilling to do to beat them. Like a frog in a niche, they went extinct.
