Linus Torvalds: Linux succeeded thanks to selfishness and trust
- jqpabc123 3y agoIt succeeded because they had a Unix model to follow and others more or less accepted Linus as "benevolent dictator for life". This is the simplest and most efficient organization possible but the real critical test begins once the dictator's reign ends. Is there a succession plan or does the kernel devolve into Red Hat OS? Will there continue to be one kernel or multiple competing ones? An orderly continuance doesn't usually just happen all by itself.
- notanothereric 3y agoYou beat me to the observation so my follow up question is - what does kernel.org look like after the sun sets on Linus … does it devolve into a collection of maintainers driven by petty grievances? Or accepting vs rejecting PRs and merges based on corporate influence and interests?
- jqpabc123 3y agowhat does kernel.org look like after the sun sets on Linus I'd say the answer depends on Red Hat more so than anyone else. They are the largest single contributor. It's pretty clear that Red Hat is prepared either way --- with or without kernel.org. And their recent moves suggest that they may actually prefer without --- at least in it's current form.
