Do large language models know what they are talking about?
- fasghf34532 3y agoYes. The long answer would be, think about planes vs. birds. Are both capable of flying? Yes Do both use the same capabilities/resources to execute the flying thing? No Again, do both fly anyway? Yes Now compare "human thinking" vs. "LLM stochastic parroting".
- fasghf34532 3y ago"Is knowing language enough to have knowledge?" Wow, it is an obvious yes. Almost any university in the world could tell you that a really good chunk of knowledge is being continuously transferred from books to brains, around the world, 24x7x365. So if some thing - a LLM - has the capability to learn (not memorizing), and you provide it a book to read, it will learn stuff, most probably.
- fasghf34532 3y agoAll the human chit-chat usually doesn't summarize itself to a meaningful concept, and so it happens with texts like this one, which are actually beautiful as brain exercise, the way of twisting the meaning of the words beyond its literal significance, how extrapolates ideas from phrases to insinuate conclusions without obviously literally mentioning the idea. But little final conclusions can be distilled from it except for a bullet list of doubts.
