Threads Wants to Join the Fediverse, but Some Mastodon Users Say No Way
- __warlord__ 3y agoWell well well how the turntables.
- waselighis 3y agoEmbrace, extend, and extinguish.
- PaulHoule 3y agoNot sure I believe it. Threads is like 50x the size of the fedi, what do they gain from joining it other than trouble?
- catchnear4321 3y agoit. they get it. right, right, that’s not how this works, fediverse means that, that’s why fediverse exists, etc. but no it doesn’t, because like you said, 50x the size. implicitly it wouldn’t be joining the fediverse. the fediverse would be joining it. no need to crush it when you are almost all of it.
- PaulHoule 3y agoFrom the viewpoint of privacy it is an absolute train crash too. I mean, Facebook wants to rape you privacy wise but if they suck data into their system it is in their system and it is not going to leak out if they don't want it to. Mastodon has no controls at all, I mean, anybody can attach a server to it and start hoovering data down. When you delete your account they'll propagate a message politely asking other servers to delete your information... Yeah right. Mastodon.social is based in Germany and I can't see how they are doing this in GRPR-land without any consent theater or harassing us with endless cookie warnings except that I think explaining to Eurocrats that some hackers in some sleepy town like Dusseldorf swrote some open source software is like explaining to some birds that some rats built a little 2 foot long battleship and they want to sail to the other side of Central Park. So anything that leaks outside Threads to the fedi is out of Facebook's control and anybody can do anything they want with it, anything that gets sucked into Threads to Fedi goes into Facebook's dossier building machine (but who cares about a group which is like 1/1000th the number of total meta property subscribers?) And really anything you post to the the Fedi whatever can be hoovered up by... anybody.
