I really wonder if a large portion of the drop could be attributed to other sites that simply linked to Twitter in the first place. For instance, I don't recall Twitter's search engine ever having great discovery on its own (maybe it did; I can't remember), but from my own personal experience, most things that I discovered there were from a web search or some other site just happening to land me there somewhere. So, I imagine the traffic will just keep getting lower as search engines forget about them more.
