But space is quantised, that's what Planck's Constant is.
The oddity we see with things at relativistic energies is simply because - as with all discretised representations of continuous-time systems - things get a bit fucky close to Nyquist, and the maths breaks down.
- fsh 3y agoThere is zero evidence that space is quantized, and this would contradict the Standard Model, as well as General Relativity. The Planck constant gives the relation between the energy of a photon (or more generally a harmonic oscillator) and its frequency. It has nothing to do with the structure of space.

- zerodensity 3y agoHow exactly does quantized space-time contradict the Standard Model and General Relativity?
- consilient 3y agoIt would break Lorentz symmetry, for one.
- edgyquant 3y agoYou’re thinking of Planck scale which is just a mathematical abstraction not some physical thing we’ve observed.
- jfengel 3y agoThat's not what Planck's Constant is. Planck's Constant connects energy to length (in space or time). It's just a way of shifting units around. You're thinking of the Planck Length, which is the result of combining the Planck Constant with the speed of light. It also happens to be the wavelength of a photon so short that its energy makes it a black hole, connecting it to gravity. It's often presented as if it were the fundamental unit of length, but that's a guess at best. There's no specific reason to believe it, other than the fact that it happens to be a way to connect length, charge, and gravity. That's evocative, but hardly proof. There's neither evidence for it nor a well-supported theory behind it.

- cornel_io 3y agoI think it didn't land because so many people are in the comments seriously arguing almost exactly what you were saying as a joke. Tough environment for parody to thrive in, alas...
- Gordonjcp 3y agoI'm currently spending a lot of time in La-La-Laplacian Land, so maybe my sense of humour is currently a bit warped. A bit like my filter responses, really.
- mrguyorama 3y agoHN as a forum is no better than a pub or bar in a wealthy city. You cannot spout off an extremely common layman misconception and expect people to recognize that as a joke. Most of us are laymen in this area.
- jfengel 3y agoI'm afraid I don't get the joke, but that's on me. I apologize.
