No wonder, it's because processors were actually cheap, but higher price points were created artificially. Great example is Intel 486SX ($333) vs 486DX ($588). In fact, they had to disable co-processor in 486DX in order to produce 486SX, so SX net cost per unit was higher. [1] Referenced article has many more such anecdotal examples.
