Drilling for Oil on the Moon
- PaulHoule 3y agoI was about to think somebody was speculating about asteroidal materials existing on the moon. Note the average lunar surface temperature is a bit below the freezing point of water. In principle ice could survive just a few meters under the surface although it would slowly sublimate if there wasn't some geological trapping structure that kept it in place, much like the trapping structures involved in oil and gas mining. If by some chance there was ice there you might also find some trapped cosmogenic CH4. The best bet of course is that we will find water and other volatiles in the permanently dark craters. I'm pretty sure these kinds could survive on other places on the moon but the question is how they would have gotten there.
- eesmith 3y agoIt's about arctic oil drilling, not anything space related. The title comes from the quote: > As one oilman put it to me recently in Alaska, Arctic oil production “is the closest thing to drilling on the moon.”
