I didn't mean to imply anything about areas outside the lower 48 being "less American", just that the total population outside the lower 48 is such a small fraction of the total. The US has bases and embassies all around the world which are full of people who are just as American as anyone, but if [1] this article is to be believed, over 99% of Americans are in the lower 48.
