You're argument is basically, "It's really hard so we shouldn't try."
A good social scientist understands everything you're pointing out. This isn't news to anyone nor is it even really controversial.
But we can witness phenomena in society so people try and understand them. Would you prefer we not try and understand them? Just give up because it's too hard to figure out?
- AlexandrB 3y agoThere's definitely an appeal to solving a simpler, technological problem instead of tackling the more difficult, societal one. Consider crypto, which tries to solve concentration of power in financial institutions by creating a distributed technology for tracking financial transactions. Unfortunately this just kicks the can down the road.
- User23 3y agoSometimes the can just needs to be kicked indefinitely. Every time you perform some kind of maintenance on something that degrades over time, like a house or a car, you're can kicking, because unless the thing being maintained ceases to exist, you or your successors will eventually face the same issue again and again. Frankly it's a pretty lousy metaphor.
