I joined Threads and followed the same people I follow on Instagram. Real slick signup process. What's everyone talking about? Mostly a combination of Hello, World! type posts, and "why is Threads showing me random celebrity crap? I don't care what kind of weird tree Paris Hilton just saw." For that reason, I remain sceptical of retention. Besides, my audience on Instagram, i.e., not programmers, is so different from the audience I had when I had Twitter.
