I’m not sure what this means. Did mastodon.social go fascist or something?
I’m more a lemmy fan than a mastodon one (prefer a focus on content rather than individuals), but I do have a mindly.social account that I hardly check. I feel like I missed something important lol.
- jtode 3y agoI closed my main instance account this week after realizing I was on Twitter. It didn't seem to start that way, I was doing a lot of great connecting with people who garden and do other things I do, but I got into a couple of very pointless arguments with people identifying as "team twitter" so to speak in the last couple days and the very tiny glimmer of hope that this might be a different thing of its own was snuffed. I'm holding out thin hope that the threatened schism network that defederates both from Meta and from instances that federate with it actually happens, because that will definitely be a tiny network, and might work for me. I also might give Lemmy a try, but I'm a little off it these days. I believe there's a way this can work and I believe there's enough of us who want to do it exactly that way, but I'm not sure if it's possible for us to reach each other without getting derailed by this thing or that.
- tsuujin 3y agoLemmy is good to me today after a few rough starts. My personal recommendation: stay away from lemmy.ml (needlessly political), lemmygrad (racist and hateful from an outside observation), and beehaw.org (had high hopes here but seems like it leans way too hard into virtue signaling for my tastes). Programming.dev is where I landed, lemmy.world is larger and a more apt Reddit replacement but too damn noisy for me… and I can just browse “federated” feed if I really want to see what’s up. Special call out to lemmy.sdf.org as a really niche little group.
- jtode 3y agoI was a fairly satisfied Reddit user until I got arbitrarily shadowbanned in my home city's sub, the irony there being, I am fully in line with the echo chamber rules, someone just straight up didn't like my tone and instead of warnings/temp ban they went straight to shadowban. Didn't take long to figure it out cause I was a regular poster, not just a commenter. I'm not mad at whatever coward did that, but that was it for my taking reddit seriously. If someone can anonymously remove an actual citizen of the city from the city's sub with no appeal or explanation, that's an absolute garbage public square. And while I had some other subs that amused me, I was there to interact with my real community. So that was like a year ago and while I miss having all the funny links before all my friends get them two days later on the corporate platforms, I didn't find that I was missing much in terms of quality interaction anyways, and I'm as guilty as anyone I talked to, I was a shitposter on there. Not a racist or a troll or anything like that but I definitely trafficked in lazy sarcasm. I'm kinda bummed about Mastodon because I was actually having some quality interactions, until about two weeks ago. Correlation is not causation of course, but there's definitely some correlations there...
- Doxin 3y agoA lot of people bringing drama and/or low effort posts end up on mastodon.social. No clue how true it is but there have been claims that mastodon.social doesn't properly moderate their instance. As far as I can tell mastodon.social is like having a noisy neighbor. It's not ideal.
