I take issue with the argument that liberal misinterpretation of the history and values of the Enlightenment, including the primacy of individual autonomy led to the rise of global plutocrats and the attendant collapse of middle class society. Bezos, Musk and their ilk aren’t the first plutocrats we’ve seen; and their historical predecessors thrived under conditions of far less concern for individual rights and autonomy. Nonetheless, I’m in agreement with the author about many of Hitchens’ flaws. But the implied conclusion that because he supported the invasion of Iraq that his vision of the secular society is therefore flawed, is unsupported.
