Off the top of my head, there are four criteria I can think of that determine the value - to myself - of something I'm doing professionally: how much money it'll bring me, how much I'm learning, how much I'm enjoying it, and how beneficial it is to society as a whole. If I'm not getting at least 2 out of 4, then it's probably not worth doing. Learning might be the only exception.
