Deep space experts prove Elon Musk's Starlink is interfering in scientific work
- LeoPanthera 3y agoI don't know if this is a popular opinion or not, but I still believe that easy global communication is important. If it wasn't SpaceX, it would be someone else. I don't doubt that it's interfering with science, but I also don't believe that science can't continue. Workarounds will be found. I think it's worth it. This article also contains an inaccuracy. It says: "Starlink satellites can be seen with the naked eye as they pass overhead" This is only briefly true for freshly-launched satellites. After they attain orbit they use thrusters to raise their orbit, and after a few days, they become invisible in all but the most unusual circumstances.
- p-e-w 3y agoSpot on. The subtext of the headline seems to be "... and therefore should be prohibited". Which is an incredibly dangerous and arrogant idea. Science is just one of many, many human endeavors. It's not something that's in a class of its own and must be possible to conduct to the exclusion of everything else, which is what those people appear to believe. Anytime you feel that scientists should be the ones running the world, you can look to incidents like this one to cure you of that thought.
