It's a response to the Info Explosion and the associated Noise and chaos.
Once everyone is hooked up to a network, or as networks hook up with to each other, the thing that happens always is Info explodes. As cost to broadcast drops to 0,cost to exploit, spam and scam drops to 0 too. Ppl want attention much more than they are capable of paying attention. Such things compound the Info Tsunami.
And we have 3 inch chimp brains to parse it all. The info overloads everything.
Unless systems exist that compress the info and make them meaningful.
That's what financial credit ratings try to do. That ls what's Google search rankings try to do. That's what youtube/fb/amazon search tries to do. Thats what the financial market indexes try to do. Each case is a reaction to info exploding.
Freedom to keep exploding info matters less and less. When people are talking about Trust they are really asking for solutions to the info explosion. My company had 5 ppl now it has 5000 who do I pay attention on any given day?
The sign that solutions are working is simple - info has been reduced.
