From the conclusion: “This is just scratching the surface of Code Interpreter, which I think is the strongest case yet for a future where AI is a valuable companion for sophisticated knowledge work. Things that took me weeks to master in my PhD were completed in seconds by the AI, and there were generally fewer errors than I would expect from a human analyst. Human supervision is still vital, but I would not do a data project without Code Interpreter at this point.”
I got access to Code Interpreter yesterday and have spent about three hours playing with it.
Here’s one thing I tried. I wanted to see if I could get it to convert JPEG page scans of a book into a readable EPUB e-book. After about an hour of back-and-forth, it was able to write and run a Python script that combined a variety of OCR and text processing tools to produce a downloadable EPUB that was about 90% of what I wanted. The remaining problems had to do with its inability to detect paragraph breaks and other features of the scanned text; some of those problems are probably solvable with a bit more work.
I am not a programmer, and I would not have had the ability or energy to create such a program myself. I imagine there must be many, many other applications for Code Interpreter. We just need to think of them and try them.
