Just because they are available doesn’t mean they are entitled to them. You’re forgetting that millions of other people are competing for that same spot. Newspapers are competing for space against my tweet, blog, internet site, Netflix, tiktok, IG, etc. they had no competition before. I don’t think you could say that local newspapers ALWAYS break the story and if not, why should they be compensated for just “retweeting” what someone else has done? In fact, I would say that social media users break way more stories than local newspapers.
