A better question is who cares what's advantageous to Tesla? What's advantageous to North America is that there is a common charging standard that allows all EVs to charge at all EV chargers regardless of brand. Anything less is backward, primitive, and underdeveloped.
Apparently what North America has finally settled on is CCS chargers using Tesla's plug and now it has to go through a dumb plug transition with adapters and charger retrofits.
Europe, in contrast, got EV infrastructure right. They standardized on CCS Type 2 Combo. In Europe all brands of EV can charge at all brands of charging network just as nature intended.
North America has a lot of catching up to do.
- ethanbond 3y agoWell these NACS announcements tend to spike Tesla's share price, so clearly someone does. I'm just using it as an opportunity to learn about the details of this transition, which your comment doesn't clarify either. The details of how this standard works (from a business perspective) and how we can expect energy/auto/infra industry to react are arguably the only things worth trading TSLA on - either short or long. I'm thrilled there's movement toward any standard at all and AFAICT consensus seems to be that NACS is superior to CCS, so that's great. Everyone wins, at least in the short term, and consumers likely win in the long term regardless of how or if Tesla gets paid. That's just orthogonal to the thing I'm curious about right now.
- clouddrover 3y ago> The details of how this standard works The standard works by being CCS with Tesla's plug. It's CCS with a changed plug. That's all.
- ethanbond 3y agoOkay, it seems like you just don't know the answer to the question I'm actually asking. Perfectly fine — neither do I! It's a bit rude to omit what is obviously the key point of my question and then act clever about "answering" it. Have a good weekend!
- clouddrover 3y agoYou're not asking a question. You're attempting to construe the world through the irrational decision making of retail investors. That will never lead you anywhere good. The benefits are obvious: universal charging infrastructure and more revenue from more EVs for charging providers.
- ethanbond 3y agoUh huh…
- clouddrover 3y agoYes, uh huh.
- vardump 3y ago"They standardized on CCS Type 2 Combo" Unfortunately so. Have you seen the size of that monstrosity?
- clouddrover 3y agoYes, it delivers 400 kW of charging goodness today with more to come. Remind me again, how fast are Tesla's chargers with the Tesla plug?
- vardump 3y agoI think the new version is supposed to be about 1 MW.
- clouddrover 3y agoIt's "supposed" to be. Great. What does it do today?
- vardump 3y agoOk, Supercharger v4 specs say 600 kW. A bit confused, perhaps there will be two different versions; 600 kW for Cybertruck and 1 MW for Tesla Semi. Some V4 stalls have been already installed, apparently max. 615 kW unless limited by available power. See: https://www.google.com/search?q=installed+tesla+v4+supercharger https://www.google.com/search?q=installed+tesla+v4+superchar... So it can do up to 615 kW at 1 kV – today.
- clouddrover 3y agoThe very first article in the very first link of your Google search says the Tesla V4 charger is "limited to 250kW at the moment". And that charger uses CCS Type 2 Combo plugs, not Tesla plugs: https://www.theverge.com/2023/4/19/23689247/tesla-v4-supercharger-ev-first-specs-rollout https://www.theverge.com/2023/4/19/23689247/tesla-v4-superch... Can you show me a public Tesla charger delivering 600 kW on the Tesla plug in the field today, or is this more pie in the sky "supposed" to be stuff with no practical basis? For contrast, here's an example of 400 kW CCS chargers deployed in the field today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qR2M5W6saAk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qR2M5W6saAk Here's another 400 kW charger from a different charger manufacturer on another charging network: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4ZWN_-a2j4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4ZWN_-a2j4
