Those damn tech workers. Stop working from home so much! How am I supposed to pay for all these pesky public services for all these pesky homeless when I can’t collect your gas tax?

- rhaway84773 3y agoSF spends about 650mm/yr on homelessness in its budget. I very much doubt that nearly rounding figure expense has anything to do with this.
- kelnos 3y agoSF's budget is around $14B (or at least was last year); I don't think 5% is small enough to qualify as a rounding error. (Regardless, presumably the GP comment was sarcastic.)
- arcticbull 3y agoWow that's crazy. Canada's capital, Ottawa, is similarly sized (about 800K-1M depending on how you slice it) and has a budget of just 5.5B CAD or 4.14B USD. [1] What in the fresh hell are they spending 3.5X Ottawa's budget on? Surely not street cleaning. - Gareth321 3y ago[This article](https://www.city-journal.org/article/where-has-the-money-gone https://www.city-journal.org/article/where-has-the-money-gon...) paints a picture of gross mismanagement and largesse.
- Ancalagon 3y agoFunny thats nearly the budget shortfall described in the article. (albeit for a 2 year period instead of 1)
- arcticbull 3y agoEven if you work from home in SF your employer still owes the SF Prop C gross receipts tax. Wild eh? City already lost Stripe, Square and PayPal to it. I think SF suffers from its own type of 'resource curse' [1] where like Venezuela and its oil, city leadership takes incredibly for granted the continued presence of tech in the city and just runs it into the dirt.
