All these papers, articles, blogposts and talking heads on the news shouting about catastrophic AI risks and related nonsense is incredibly relentless. Most of it is vague handwaving with a lot of shouty “think of the politicians” and “think of the children”.
The big players are desperate for a moat. They spent billions, and now need to keep the riffraff out. So they panic the general population, and then push the politicians to install and legitimise committees, working groups, and regulatory bodies filled with “experts” on their payroll to ensure it is pay to play from here on out. The EU - champions of regulation, and not wanting to be seen to be lagging when it comes to stifling technology - are already playing ball.
It is boring and infuriating at the same time, and I strongly believe we are 12-18 months out from a point where storing, developing, or running LLMs will be only be allowed for the select few that will act as gatekeepers of the technology to the hoi-polloi
I want out, please.
