Wasn't Mastodon supposed to do that?
Meta has been around almost as long as Twitter and couldn't compete with Twitter during the heyday of new social networks. What makes you so confident they can succeed when they have a history of consistently dropped the ball to other social networks like TikTok and Twitter?

Twitter's death was always going to be death by thousands of papercuts. But Threads is a legit knife to the heart. As a closed-source centralized platform they can innovate quickly and address user concerns, something Mastodon can't do.

He's a tool, and everyone on Twitter knows it. Everyone from the bottom-of-the-barrel conservative free speech commentators to the pie-in-the-sky trust fund liberals. I'm not very fond of Mark Zuckerberg either, but at least he's capable of waking up in the morning and not sending C&Ds to his competitors out of desperation. He just shows up, puts on a friendly face and offers everything that Twitter refuses to.
