I have been running a home Ubuntu server for many years. My most precious asset is a repo of cron scripts. I used to run all sorts of services but now I don't. I keep cloud, and cloud test stuff, in the cloud. Bar keeping Ubuntu up to date it looks after itself. I have a Windows vm running on the box and can connect to it via VNC. No firewall ports open on my router. VNC provide the connection service. Access to the vm often saves my bacon when working in corporate environments.
