> Conclusions: Vitamin D supplementation might reduce the incidence of major cardiovascular events, although the absolute risk difference was small and the confidence interval was consistent with a null finding.
- f311a 3y agoMight is the most important word here. The majority of papers about nutrition or supplements will have it in the conclusion.
- adamsmith143 3y agoCan't publish a paper with no findings so they add "might reduce". By the same logic it "Might" increase all cause mortality or might increase lung cancer incidence. Trash study.
- nkozyra 3y agoTo be fair I don't read a lot of medical studies but how many use more assertive, declarative language?
- ffhhttt 3y agoThose that fan reject the null hypothesis?
- psychphysic 3y agoNo it's just confirmation bias in the public. This is standard reporting but you need to know biostats to appreciate what it's saying because that's who articles are written for.
- adamsmith143 3y agoDon't think you need a Phd to understand this: "the confidence interval was consistent with a null finding." Aka the study found nothing.
- psychphysic 3y agoTrue.
- wiz21c 3y ago> ...the confidence interval was consistent with a null finding. ok, nothing to see here...
- psychphysic 3y agoI'm surprised so many comments miss this. For heart disease it was a small effect size and not a statistically significant result. I.e. neither clinically nor statistically significant.
- DebtDeflation 3y agoThis has been the story for decades now. Low blood levels of Vitamin D is highly correlated with just about every disease known to mankind. Yet, studies repeatedly have shown that Vitamin D supplementation has next to no benefit in curing those diseases. So either there's a jointly correlated third factor like sun exposure or low Vitamin D levels are CAUSED by those diseases and in general just an indicator of overall poor health.

- cpncrunch 3y agoSunlight does seem to correlate with reduced mortality, and there is speculation that the benefit is actually due to nitric oxide.
- tdstein 3y agoInteresting. Do you have any additional information on nitric oxide that you could link too?
- Aerroon 3y agoI don't have a link, but nitric oxide in the body increases blood flow and reduces blood pressure. (Although I think it's only the upper number.)
- solarmist 3y agoThis has been known for a long time and is why bodybuilders use nitric oxide supplements before workout. Whether that does what they’re hoping is not proven, but it’s common and popular.
- phkahler 3y agoSo take Viagra?
