Leaked curriculum proposal shows further degradation of science in New Zealand
- EdwardDiego 3y ago> a senior fellow at the New Zealand Initiative When they were still called the Business Roundtable, the neoliberal policies of the NZI were avidly taken up by the government of the day, and inequality rapidly skyrocketed. Just so you know that the person they heavily quote is coming from as much of an ideological position as the bureaucrats who _drafted_ this curriculum.

It's a leak of a rough concept draft for primary schools being beaten up by culture warriors projecting pearl clutching concerns over issues the final form likely won't have.
- nyokodo 3y ago> beaten up by culture warriors The article you linked quoted the President of the Association of Science Educators, a couple of prominent figures from the New Zealand Institute of Physics Education Council, also the Secondary Chemistry Educators New Zealand etc. Where are these “culture warriors” you speak of? The criticism is coming from educators and scientists.
- defrost 3y agoThis is the current hot button issue in the New Zealand Press. There's a wealth of hot takes across NZ media - see for yourself. Journalists are taking quotes out of context, inject all manner of spin for various pre existiing PoV's. The core material is a leaked DRAFT outlining notions of breaking down pure silos in favor of broader intergrated approaches in PRIMARY school education. It's not final form, it's not seeking to reject physic | chemisrty, etc. The most level headed quote on the actual source material would be: "What we are pushing towards with the current fast draft is more of a holistic approach to how the different science concepts interact with each other rather than a purist, siloed approach." Buntting said the draft was very high-level, as were curriculum documents for other subjects but it was clear it needed more clarity about where teachers should expect to teach various science concepts. Education Minister Jan Tinetti said there was no question the final curriculum would include chemistry, physics and biology and other core science topics. ( source: the link I provided above as an example of a relatively sane balanced take ) which should be compared against the various discussions in NZ media and online forums, there is no shortage of extreme takes far removed from the mundane reality.
- nyokodo 3y ago> Journalists are taking quotes out of context, inject all manner of spin for various pre existiing PoV's. The RNZ article quotes science educators very strongly criticizing the draft. That’s the only pre-existing PV that matters. > The core material is a DRAFT outlining notions of breaking down pure silos in favor of broader intergrated approaches in PRIMARY school education. Drafts ought to approximate a final draft and apparently science educators are appalled at this draft. Rarely are drafts totally rewritten as they represent what the administration is pushing. That’s alarming given the criticism.
- defrost 3y agoIt's not a published draft, it's leaked portions of an unfinished work. It's being treated as though the parts leaked are the complete near polished position rather than notions for comment about better integrated STEM approaches Vs more rigid pasr siloed approaches.
