Anything is better than twitter at this point.
- joegahona 3y agoWell there’s plenty to choose from. Threads, Mastodon, Substack Notes, Post.News, Bluesky, and all the tangential copycats (Nostr, Spill, T2 Social, Truth Social, Hive). We have to be reaching oversaturation in this space. I really wonder if all these projects are misjudging the appetite for a Twitter replacement.
- s3p 3y agoIn reality I think the need for a Twitter competitor was never stronger. Bluesky didn't catch on, they're not even out of private beta. Mastodon is riddled with issues that prevent it from reaching the mainstream. At present, Meta has the only product with the reach and scale capable of rivaling twitter. Even if you think the alternatives are "good enough", it doesn't matter because no one is using them. This will be different.
- jacooper 3y agoNone of them other than threads has reached enough traction, threads is growing incredibly fast, and will have critical mass for users to migrate. Also there is nothing new to learn, just use your existing Instagram account/create one and you are ready.
- treyd 3y agoTruth Social is just a fork of Mastodon and is a terminal grift on followers of that particular political personality. Hive was a school project by 2 people that managed to secure funding without a real strategy and afaik hasn't really been able to reach a critical mass.
- attentive 3y agoIt's like they are not even trying - bluesky requires an invite, threads requires a phone. So I can't use either. Some saturation.
- zeroonetwothree 3y agoDo you not have phones?
- attentive 3y agoWhy on earth would I use small handheld sitting in front of big monitors? And no, if I am out and about I am not going be surfing on my phone.
- _justinfunk 3y agoWhy?
- jacooper 3y agoDid you see what elon did last week? I am not going to pay for a social media site which still gives me ads and has rate limits.
- tradewinds 3y agoYou don't have to pay and the rate limits are temporary, this was stated at the point they started. It's a big deal to the anti-Musk activists but from a user standpoint it's generally negligible.
- cmrdporcupine 3y agoYou can't view content there without an account now. Not sure why people aren't making a bigger deal about this. Acres of content were removed from the public web overnight, and people (like journalists) who still treat this like it's some sort of public service seem clueless to this. Rate limiting is minor compared to that.
- sp332 3y agoThey already reverted that. https://www.engadget.com/twitter-quietly-backtracks-on-requiring-users-to-log-in-to-see-tweets-135230558.html https://www.engadget.com/twitter-quietly-backtracks-on-requi...
- cmrdporcupine 3y agoI still can't view any content without signing in.
- tradewinds 3y agoThis comment thread started with someone explaining why they won't use Twitter, and now you're arguing from the standpoint of someone who essentially doesn't use it anyway.
