Macron suggests blocking social media during riots
- JimtheCoder 3y agoThis will definitely de-escalate things and make similar situations easier to deal with in the future.../s
- unpopularopp 3y agoHate this because it just gives more ammo for authoritarians in the EU like Orban "See they are doing it in France, if the liberal west is ok with it then we can do it as well!"
- pjmlp 3y agoAs someone from the first generation after Portugal's dictorship, I hate this, because it feels like comming back to the Europe my parents have to live through, and I still experienced as a kid and listening to family stories. However many seem to only know this from history books, or from other countries outside Europe, so they keep voting for the wrong parties, until it is too late.
- gumballindie 3y agoFunny how you think what macron wants is legitimate but what orban wants is not, when in fact both are equally wrong. France should absolutely not block social media when the french are rightfully protesting against corruption and poverty just as orban shouldn't when hungarians protest against similar issues in hungary. Those who commit damage and acts of violence should be punished but not the whole society. The real question is what brought the french this level of despair.
- tiznow 3y agoArab Spring, anyone?

- superb_dev 3y agoSlippery slope towards shutting off the internet entirely during protests
- rvz 3y agoYou got who you voted for. (again)
- touisteur 3y agoMore precisely, we got who we brought to power in all elections, local up to national elections, in the last 20 years or so. The choices given in the last elections were between mostly shades of authoritarianism, and I don't believe any other major candidate would have behaved any better here, and that's not to defend Macron's recent accelerated downward spiral... and most people were complaining about the available choices in presidential and parliamentary elections (as I did). We got the people we voted for (or refused to vote for, too, see abstention numbers) at all levels. You don't get a national-level movement without feet on the ground and a constant political effort.
- fakedang 3y agoAhhh I see Macaroon is taking ideas from India and Modi now.
- NX9mqsSv8 3y agoNorth Algeria adopting similar civil rights to Algerian colonial power.
- etempleton 3y agoMacron seems to lack any good instincts as a leader. Blocking social media is what autocrats and dictators do.
- mock-possum 3y agoOoh no that’s a bad thing to do, you don’t wanna do that.
