One things is the phone apps. My mastodon apps (tootle and mastodon) don’t work well. They lag and sometimes don’t show me my notifications. Tootle can’t display ‘ properly and I see words like it’s turn into it's. The Mastodon app doesn’t show my pinned post when I go to my profile. I’ve been on mastodon for six years and it’s definitely got better, but still needs more polish. Also the performance of the site isn’t great, but that might just be because of it’s federated nature.
