I did the same when I ran GNOME, but I realized I'm doing too much work to mold it to my taste and I still end up unsatisfied. So I switched to tilling window manager and never looked back. I can customize and setup up things just like I want. Tilling window management is to be honest secondary function for me. Customization is number one.
