"Given that the API changes and rate limits went into effect on July 1, Reddit is preparing for a new chapter with fewer third-party apps, more focus on its own apps, and an unhappy community."
I predict it all gets worse from here:
* more ads
* third-party apps get blocked; only Reddit official app allowed
* mobile website blocks and redirects to Reddit official app
* more ads
* Official Reddit app wants more permissions: show notifications, track location, etc.
* Desktop website requires ad blockers to be turned off
* more ads
To make more money they must show more ads and collect more user info for targeted advertising.
- TechBro8615 3y agoI will never understand the logic of forcing advertisements on people who have shown extreme unwillingness to see or click them. Either you're screwing the advertisers by serving their ads to disinterested/hostile eyeballs, or you're screwing the users by forcing them into a defenseless position against psychological warfare (basically saying "it doesn't matter if you ignore the ads, because as long as we show them to you, you'll inevitably succumb to human weakness").
- potsandpans 3y agothe problem is that advertisement is borderline coercion. even a population vehemently opposed to advertisement on reddit scale will click on ads. if i were to guess: reddits gamble is that enough people will click on them to ktlo, ipo and squeeze as much out of it as physically possible.
