As this is an international forum, maybe don’t take a post like this as a presumption on the importance of domestic USA issues. But this article is a neutral maybe centrist perspective on the changes in the largest, most multicultural and powerful self-sufficient nation. Those are big challenges and we have two parties being pulled in three dimensions.
The Democratic Party has been dealing with its racist past generationally. Most Americans today would not be attracted to the personalities of the old Democratic guard of the 60s. Hillary Clinton, for example, moved from Republican to Democrat when the parties became closer under Nixon. Conservatism in this group means reflecting on the founding of America to build on morals and not 18th century international religion.
At the same time, the chaos of the 60s and 70s persuaded many neoliberal white Americans that, while asking for social change is laudable, our political institutions lack the methods and answers to make change into a net positive. Conservatism among Republicans means rewarding agrarian ideals which contrast with the forces back in Europe that their ancestors escaped. For example, inconsistent taxation and class-based education.
For both parties, deviations from the above can be explained by racism. Our post-industrial workforce is divided on accepting this “wokeness”. But our last demographic transition was toward a post-industrial workforce, and our next will be a population without any particular racial dominance.
So partisan commentary makes two mistakes. Republicans are tired of white supremacy being found everywhere, but the occasion to point it out means white supremacy is in fact fading into the historical background. They’re better off responding that it’s getting harder and harder to find it. Democrats fail to realize that their party historically comes from weird coalitions. Litigating which definition of Identity Politics is most suitable for their coalition isn’t helpful. In a social media landscape increasingly dominated by elites, they should devote their scarce access to people’s attention with messaging about who is fixing problems of governance.
