This is a case of trying to obsessively rationalize the irrational. Nobody gives a shit about society's "productivity" when they consume alcohol. Alcohol tends to be used to relax or to numb pain. It's not exactly the context where you're pondering about the GPD. And surely everybody knows it's bad for your health, as are many things that people continue to do regardless.
