Big Alcohol is currently benefiting from the headline-domination of the opioid crisis. At one point, alcohol addiction was a major public health focus, but it’s definitely taken a back seat for the past few years. It does seem to me that taxing alcohol at higher rates makes sense to offset the social costs of providing healthcare and encourage moderation.
