The Big Penis War
- c420 3y agoAlternate headline: Erection Fraud in Texas, Competing Doctors Pitch Tents in Battle
- huitzitziltzin 3y agoHow about “cross swords in court” at the end there? Truly amazing an amazing title in the original too.

- mdekkers 3y agoPersonal opinion: The New Yorker article is of significant higher quality
- mellosouls 3y ago(OP) Agree. The original is ok though and its difficult to know which has the more appropriate take. I didn't see the NY article before posting and may not have checked it due to it often being paywall-restricted. I'd be fine with it being changed, though I'd regret the loss of the title...
- Reubend 3y ago> Like many others, Elist then took advantage of a regulatory loophole in seeking the FDA’s blessing. Known as a 510(k) clearance, it sets aside the requirement of a full safety review for biomedical inventions determined to be “substantially equivalent” to products that were on the market before the passage of new federal regulations on medical devices in 1976. Elist argued that his implant was similar to the silicone implants long used in ear, nose, and throat surgeries. The FDA agreed in 2004, granting Elist permission to begin implanting the device “for use in the cosmetic correction of soft tissue deformities.” Deformity, Elist believes, lies in the eye of the beholder. He began advertising his invention, named the Penuma at his son Jonathan’s suggestion, as the “first FDA-cleared penile implant for cosmetic male enhancement.” To me, the most interesting thing in this story is actually that Elist is selling potentially dangerous implants outside the scope of his FDA approval. Even though he only has clearance to use it for "deformities", he's marketing it for the purpose of "enhancement".
- lockhouse 3y agoEveryone is laughing and making puns, but if someone can actually secure the proper regulatory approval and make a penis enhancement procedure safe, effective, and side effect free they will effectively print money. The demand for this sort of procedure is enormous.

- local_crmdgeon 3y agoSounds like the better product was pulled and the remaining option is causing permanent genital harm. That’s not particularly funny.
