You'll maybe be pleased to know that I've already had this as a coding interview at a couple of high frequency trading FPGA interviews. I didn't do well at all in the first interview. Second time I got asked it I laughed, because I had spent a weekend down a rabbit hole, programming one on an old Cyclone V. Basically just a load of counters and state-machines.
