ChromeOS takes the Gentoo Linux, and improves its sandboxing and verified boot. Those exist in Linux distributions too, but are not as complete. On the other hand, chromeOS is cloud based, and collects tons of telemetry. ChromeOS is not as secure if you enable the developer mode. There is also far more malware for iOS and Android, compared to the desktop Linux. Apple’s operating systems are closed, thus insecure against Apple and governments.
Overall, I think one would be better off on a Linux distribution. Definitely more private, equally secure against not-so-sophisticated attackers, while the edge that Google’s and Apple’s operating systems have in security won’t stop well resourced adversaries either (as we have seen in iPhone hacks). Full freedom!
