It's time to mark six decades of computer networking
- turtleyacht 3y agoWonder if "barriers to entry" are knowledge contexts, multiple Chesterton's fences¹ for learning, that convenience would only serve to endanger: * Hardware: how things fit together * OS: partition, install, user accounts * Static route: personal address to world * Firewall: importance of default deny * Domain Name: registrar, recurring cost * DNS: finding other sites * SSH: using keys, externalizing the self * Software packages: dependencies * Security patching: or else * Backup discipline: also or else The latter two surface themselves almost last in the list but could be the most critical and ought to be considered up-front. What was previously thought as "haughty knowledge gatekeeping" turns out to be "a real concern" that smoothening out these friction points could lead to oblivious compromise. ¹ https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/Chesterton%27s_fence https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/Chesterton%27s_fence
