Interesting. I think you'd find that doing this in chunks of 128-bit wide vectors with platform-agnostic logic would be even better. Have you tried something like Google Highway or writing this exact logic in scalar code and seeing if the compiler will autovectorize it? Then you have the option to do up to 4 of them at once instead of one if your platform supports it.
