Google Search's Death by a Thousand Cuts
- tornato7 3y agoPeople mention LLMs as a reason for these services locking down their content but they also miss an even bigger free-rider on their information, which is the snippet provided by Google at the top of the search page. Websites don't appreciate when they're denied a click because Google copy and pasted a snippet of what the user needed.
- LinuxBender 3y agoIn theory they can avoid that using the robots "nosnippet" Google, Bing and "noarchive" Google, Yahoo, Bing. - DamonHD 3y agoThis assumes that sites exist entirely to drive clicks to monetise, and maybe that there is some stand-alone right for that business model to exist universally. In some (many?) cases (including mine) sites are interested in getting information out there as efficiently as possible. If a search engine can save the searcher a click and the host some load, then that is often fine.
