I don’t think that this is really that surprising. New York City has 51 city council members - 1 for every 165k residents. Los Angeles has 15 - 1 for every 255k residents. Houston has 16 - 1 for every 144k residents. Chicago has 77 - 1 for every 35k residents! It’s just far more direct and personal. You have to pay attention to your constituents, you have to recognize their accomplishments, you have to listen to them. Or you don’t get re-elected.
